Internet of Things (IoT) is a set of technologies that enables intelligent objects to connect to a network, making them capable of interacting with the environment by sending and receiving data: these devices are connected to a network and are able to exchange data autonomously thanks to the presence of sensors. DT applications allow to collect, monitor, and transfer information, which can subsequently be analyzed and processed, generating value for the business.
Considering the Supply Chain – particularly in production, logistics, distribution, and retail – DT applications enable intelligent process control and respond to two main needs:
- Track & trace: tracking of the position of assets, products, or devices
- Monitoring: monitoring the status of assets and machinery
